Dear Parents:
Dear Parents, Staff, and Students:
Our Christmas Concert and Empty Bowls evening was quite a success. It was definitely a great way to end the year and start off the Holiday Season! We are all very thankful to our Music and Art Dep artment for the time devoted to this activity and for teaching our students that excellence is reached throu gh hard work.
Mr. Chris and Mrs. Jodi Peterson have informed me that the total amou nt collected at Empty Bowls was Lps. 112, 000.00 (One hundred and twelve thousand lempiras). A committee of students, teachers, and administrators will deliver the money to the Guarderías in Nueva Suyapa on Thursd ay afternoon.
This first half of the semester has been a ver y active one at the American School. Sports wise we hav e completed the basketball season with an AASCA Championship and several ABSH first and second places. Our teams were also awarded the SPORTSMANSHIP trophy in both tournaments. They have definitely made us proud.
We have also ended both Eagle League and Eagle Cup soccer and volleyball seasons. In January we are looking forward to Eagle League Basketball and Eagle Cup Basketball and Soccer, as well as the new Eagle Tots group for our students in Kindergarten.
Our Seniors ‘09 have been very busy with Mrs. Yolanda Avilés and their college applications. Several students have applied to Early Action Admission and the responses have been very positive:
Mario Canahuati University of Pennsylvania
Maricela Aviles Harding University
Jimmy Frech Louisiana State University, University of New Orleans
Jeremy Lampman Loyola University at Chicago
Fernando Vilches Baylor and Southern Methodist University
Edmundo del Carmen Loyola University
Most of them have received scholarships and we will keep you posted all through next semester.
As for social responsibility, we have exceed ed in this area as we do every year. Besides our traditional help to Navidad Sin Frío, Empty Bowls & Teletón our students have visited and celebrated Christmas at Hogares Pedro Atala (Pre School Students), Guarderías Nueva Suyapa (First Grade), Hogar Sor María Rosa (Fourth Grade) and Casitas Kennedy (Fifth Grade). In Middle School our students will visit the “sala de niños con cancer” (seventh grade) and “sala de neonatos” (eighth grade) both in Hospital Escuela, as well as “Guardería la Fraternidad” (sixth grade). Our Middle School students were very helpful with Operation Smile during their Christmas activities. High School kept on working hard with their different clubs such as Operation Smile, Bencaleth, Extiende tu Mano, Habitat for Humanity, Hope Club, and Casitas Kennedy.
All this could not happen without your help and your belief in us. Thanks for all your support this year and your selflessness. I am proud to say; all together we really belon g to the NUMBER ONE FAMILY / SCHOOL IN HONDURAS!
“Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2009!”
Sincerely,
Liliana F. Jenkins
